Asynchronous program combines the flexibility of online learning with optional on-campus benefits including in-person mentoring and research collaboration with faculty.
HACKETTSTOWN, NJ, Feb. 15, 2023—Centenary University has introduced an accelerated psychology degree program designed to provide the flexibility of online learning with optional on-campus benefits, including the opportunity for in-person faculty mentoring and research collaboration. The asynchronous class model makes it possible for students who have already earned an associate degree to complete a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology in just 18 months. Most classes are conducted in an eight-week format, although three take 16 weeks to complete.
“A big benefit to this program is that the accelerated format makes it possible for students to complete their bachelor’s degree a full semester earlier than traditional on-ground psychology programs,” said Christine Floether, Ph.D., associate professor of psychology and director of the accelerated program. “That saves both time and money, which are big concerns for students today.”
Students enrolled in the accelerated psychology program, which had a preliminary rollout in 2022, have the option of participating in all on-campus programs and facilities available to full-time traditional students. Those programs include opportunities to partner with faculty on independent research, internships, induction into honor societies, and other extracurricular activities.
A unique strength of the accelerated program is an optional weekly in-person check-in with faculty members. “When you’re a distance learner, you can sometimes feel like you’re out there by yourself,” explained Dr. Floether. “This gives students the option of stopping by once a week to meet their professors, ask questions, and get feedback on assignments and exams. It allows them to make a human connection. That sense of community and support is a big benefit of attending a smaller university, like Centenary.
In addition to traditional and accelerated programs leading to a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, Centenary University offers three graduate programs in the field: Master of Arts in Counseling, Master of Arts in Clinical Counseling, and Master of Arts in School Counseling. Completion of Centenary’s undergraduate psychology degree with at least a 3.0 grade point average creates a smooth path for admission to one of the University’s graduate programs.
The introduction of the accelerated psychology program at Centenary is part of a broader expansion by the University into the health and wellness sector. Over the past few years, Centenary has launched several new health- and wellness-related degrees and concentrations, including medical laboratory science, health science, public health, exercise science, and an RN to BSN program.
