Recognition for Two Centenary University Professors

Recently published book and faculty award add to prominence of the University’s faculty

 

HACKETTSTOWN, NJ, Dec. 22, 2020—Two Centenary University professors have gained recognition this semester, adding to the reputation of the University’s highly-respected faculty.

A new book co-written by Keith Morgen, Ph.D., associate professor of psychology, examines a crisis brewing in the American prison system. In Aging Behind Prison Walls: Studies in Trauma and Resilience (Columbia University Press, 2020), Dr. Morgen and co-author Tina Maschi, Ph.D., of Fordham University offer concrete proposals at the community and national policy levels for addressing the pressing issue of incarcerated older adults.

Meticulously researched, the book presents a compassionate analysis of the lives of elders in prison. Today in the United States, more than 200,000 people over 50 are languishing in prisons, with projections estimating that older adults will account for one-third of the prison population by 2030. In their book, Drs. Morgen and Maschi explore the coping strategies used by incarcerated aging adults to create meaning in their lives.

Dr. Morgen is an expert on mental health issues for nonviolent older adults in prison, as well as on addiction and recovery issues. He is also the author of Substance Use Disorders and Addictions (SAGE Publications, Inc., 2016).

In addition, Alfonso Ferguson, Ph.D., assistant professor of counseling, was recognized by the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision as the recipient of the 2020 Outstanding Counselor Education and Supervision Article award. Dr. Ferguson and several colleagues published an article, “Contributing factors to earning tenure among Black male counselor educators” in the journal Counselor Education and Supervision.
