Hackettstown, N.J. February 16, 2017 – Members of the community are invited to see a free screening of the short film called “School’s Out: Lessons from a Forest Kindergarten” at 7 p.m. on February 27, 2017 in the Taylor Memorial Library. Refreshments and a panel discussion will follow.

“School’s Out: Lessons from a Forest Kindergarten” focuses on Switzerland’s Langnau am Albis, a suburb of Zurich where children from ages 4 to 7 years old go to kindergarten outside in the woods each day, no matter what the weatherman says.

This film will then be followed with a panel discussion regarding the role of education in today’s society and educational norms throughout the world. Panelists will include Panelists include Dr. Emily Anderson, Assistant Professor of Education at Centenary University; Julie Brown, a veteran teacher who now teaches at a homeschool co-op; Cathy Celafoni, a veteran kindergarten teacher; Dr. Timothy Frederiks, Chair of the Education Department and Assistant Professor of English at Centenary University; Dr. Robert Handler, a pediatrician at Morristown Memorial Hospital/Goreb Children’s Hospital and Clinical Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at New Jersey Medical School; Professor Lexis McCoy, Director of the Master of Education in Reading Program and Assistant Professor of Education at Centenary University; Dr. Shannon Riley-Ayers, Ph.D., Associate Research Professor at NIEER; Robin Samiljan, a Kindergarten teacher at the Allamuchy Township School; and Paige Schmiedeke, teacher at Mountain Villa School in Allamuchy.

“The purpose of this event is to explore how education is administered in different areas throughout the world compared to what the societal norm is in this area,” says Dr. Timothy Frederiks, Assistant Professor of Education and Chair of the Education Department. “I hope that people in the community will join us for this insightful event.”
