Biography

Timothy Cleary joined Centenary in August 2001 as an Assistant Professor in Equine Studies.  He had returned to the east coast after living in Boulder, Colorado for eight years, where he owned a horse farm and was active in the hunter-jumper industry.  In the 80’s and 90’s, he was also involved with the hunter-jumper industry as a trainer, owner, and manager in both New Jersey and New York. During those years, he also judged, managed, announced, and course designed at several shows annually in the tri-state area.

Professor Cleary has been managing the Garden State Horse Show, the largest hunter-jumper show in New Jersey, since the 1980’s. Through his participation, Centenary and the Garden State Horse Show have forged a meaningful alliance benefiting both organizations as well as the students of Centenary University.  Professor Cleary was admitted to practice law in New York and Colorado. While he does not actively practice law, he does serve as an expert witness in equine liability cases. Years ago, he also practiced law as a trial attorney for the Suffolk County Legal Aid Society on Long Island.

In 2013, Professor Cleary was the recipient of the coveted Teacher of the Year Award at Centenary University.  It is an honor which he will always cherish.  He was the first Chair of the inaugural year of the newly established Faculty Senate many years ago.  He has also served as the Chair of the Equine Studies Department. Professor Cleary proudly declares that his finest accomplishment is being the father of three grown children.  He is honored to be a member of the fine faculty at Centenary University.
