Under Dr. Morgen’s supervision the student spends one academic year studying the substance abuse through coursework (PSY3018 – Substance Abuse & Dependence) and individual meetings. In addition, the student learns about:

  • Professional practice of conducting research that includes research ethics
  • Research question generation
  • Research literature review
  • Statistical analysis and research design
  • Scientific writing
  • Research presentation skills

Unlike other studies typically conducted by undergraduates using a small number of participants found on a college campus, the UStART student can create a study and conduct statistical analyses of data focused on up to thousands of substance abuse treatment clients.

This experience is valuable for any student with an interest in graduate school because independent research experience is consistently discussed as a critical component of a successful graduate school application (especially at the doctoral level).

The UStART students have been quite successful in their research efforts. The list below contains the UStART projects presented at the Eastern Psychological Association (EPA) Conference over the past few years.
